Garage Door Repair
Ask what a garage door repair costs and you will get a range so wide it tells you nothing. That is not evasion. The phrase covers roughly eight unrelated jobs that happen to share a doorway, and they do not sit anywhere near each other on price. A dead safety sensor and a cracked bottom panel are both "garage door repair" and there is an order of magnitude between them.
What follows is not a price list - we have no measured pricing for this trade and inventing averages would be worse than useless to you. It is the structure underneath the number: the three lines every quote is built from, and where each common failure sits relative to the others.
Almost every bill in this trade decomposes the same way, and separating the three is the single most useful thing a homeowner can do before comparing two companies.
The third line is why the same fault can cost very differently on two houses. Almost every cheap garage repair turns into an expensive one the same way: the door kept being operated after it started failing.
The cheapest visits are the ones where nothing is broken so much as misaligned. A pair of photo-eye sensors knocked out of alignment by a bicycle will stop a door from closing and produce a call that sounds like a dead opener. Worn rollers and hinges are similarly inexpensive parts, and replacing them is often bundled into a maintenance visit rather than billed as a repair at all.
Sensors are worth understanding because they are not optional equipment. Residential garage door operators sold in the United States are required to carry entrapment protection, set out in the federal standard at 16 CFR Part 1211. A technician who defeats a sensor to make a door close is not saving you money; they are removing the part of the system that exists to stop a closing door on a child or a pet.
Lift cables are cheap and the swap is quick, which puts a caught-early cable near the bottom of the range. The variable is what the cable did on the way out. A frayed cable spotted during a tune-up is a small job. A cable that snapped under load drops one side of the door, and a door that has dropped on one side can rack out of square, bend a track, crease a panel or unwind a drum. The part is still cheap; you are simply no longer paying for the part.
The practical rule is that a garage door which has become visibly crooked, or which suddenly sounds different on one side, should stop being operated until somebody looks at it. That single decision is usually worth more than anything you can negotiate on the quote. A crew that handles cable work as its own service line rather than an afterthought will normally tell you the same thing before they schedule you.
"The opener is broken" is the most common description we see and the least precise. It covers a burnt capacitor, a stripped gear kit, a failed logic board, a dead remote, a tripped circuit, and the sensors above - and those are not close to each other in cost.
Capacitors, gear kits and sensors are small parts on a motor that is otherwise fine, and they are almost always the cheaper path. A logic board is the case that turns. It is one of the priciest single components in the unit and the least likely to be stocked for a model that has been discontinued, so on an older opener the repair number and the replacement number converge. That is the conversation to have explicitly rather than by default. A cracked or caved bottom panel is where the numbers climb, and the driver is availability rather than materials. Sections are model-specific and finishes change, so a panel for a door that has been in service for a decade may be discontinued, back-ordered, or only obtainable in a colour that no longer matches the ones either side of it. Springs are the most common failure in the whole system and the one with the widest honest variation between quotes, which is why they get a page of their own rather than a paragraph here. If a spring is what broke, read what actually moves the number on a spring replacement - cycle rating, torsion against extension, and single against double doors - before you compare two figures. Assuming both companies are honest, the gap is usually one of four things, and all four are askable.

Four questions do most of the work: which specific part do you believe failed, is the trip charge credited against the repair, what grade of part are you fitting, and does the labour carry its own warranty. A company that answers all four plainly over the phone is generally the one that will not surprise you in the driveway.

Because the question describes a doorway, not a job. A frayed lift cable, a roller that jumped its track, a dead safety sensor, a burnt opener board and a cracked bottom panel are five different parts, five different labour times and five different supply situations. A company that quotes a firm number before knowing which one you have is either guessing high to protect itself or quoting a service call and leaving the rest for later. Describing the symptom precisely - what moves, what does not, what noise it makes, whether the door is level - gets you a far more useful range.
Relative to the rest of the list, usually yes. Lift cables are inexpensive parts and the labour is short when the job is caught early. What changes that is what the cable did on its way out. A cable that simply frayed is a straightforward swap. A cable that snapped or unwound off its drum lets one side of the door drop, which can pull the door out of square, bend a track or crease a panel - and at that point you are no longer paying for a cable. The cost difference between those two visits is mostly a matter of how quickly the door stopped being used.
It depends which part failed and how old the unit is. A capacitor, a gear kit or a pair of safety sensors are small parts on an otherwise sound motor, and replacing them is normally the cheaper path by a wide margin. A failed logic board on an older unit is the case where repair and replacement start converging, because the board is one of the costliest single components in the opener and it is the part least likely to be stocked for a discontinued model. Ask what the board costs against a new unit before agreeing to either.
After-hours work is priced differently everywhere in the trades, and garage doors generate more genuine emergencies than most - a door stuck open is an open house, and a door stuck closed can trap a vehicle. What matters is that the premium is disclosed as its own line rather than folded silently into the part price. If the situation is a door that is closed and secure, booking the next ordinary working slot is usually the cheaper decision and costs you nothing but the wait.
Not reliably, and the reason is that the quote and the invoice can describe different parts. Hardware for this trade comes in noticeably different grades, and the cheap version of a cable, a roller or a spring looks identical on a printed line item. The questions that keep a number honest are which grade is being fitted, whether the labour carries its own warranty separate from the part warranty, and whether the trip charge is credited against the work if you go ahead.
