Garage Door Repair vs. Replacement: How to Decide

When something goes wrong with a garage door, the first question is almost always the same: do I fix this one, or is it time for a new door? The honest answer depends on the door's age, what actually broke, and how the numbers work out.

When a repair is the right call

Most single-point problems are worth repairing, especially on a door less than 15 years old. Broken springs, frayed cables, worn rollers, a bad opener, or a dented bottom panel are all standard fixes that cost a fraction of a new door and can add years of service. If the door itself is structurally sound and only the moving parts have worn out, repair almost always wins.

When replacement makes more sense

  • The door panels are cracked, rotted, or badly bent. Structural damage to the door itself is hard to fix well.
  • Repairs are stacking up. If you are calling for service every few months, the running total starts to rival a new door.
  • The door is 20-plus years old and parts are getting hard to find.
  • You want better insulation, quieter operation, or curb appeal — a new door is one of the better-returning home upgrades.

The rough rule of thumb

If the repair costs more than about half the price of a new door, replacement is usually the smarter long-term money. A good technician will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on rather than pushing the bigger ticket.

Get an in-person assessment

Photos only tell part of the story — panel damage and track wear are easier to judge in person. It is worth having an experienced installer look at it before you decide. If you are near Houston, the team behind our recommended local garage door repair and installation service will assess the door and give you both options rather than defaulting to the expensive one.
