The garage door trade has a well-known bait pattern: a very low advertised spring price gets the truck to the driveway, and the number grows once the technician is standing in the garage. The defence is not haggling, it is specificity. Ask any bidder to put four things in writing before they come out - spring type, number of springs, cycle rating, and whether cables and bearings are included. A company that will state all four on the phone is quoting the job. One that will only give you a headline number is quoting the visit.

Once a year, with the door closed, pull the release cord and lift the door by hand. A balanced door should move with moderate effort and stay put roughly halfway up.
