AC Repair
"AC repair cost" is one of the most searched phrases in the trade and one of the least answerable, because it is not one number. It is a range wide enough that the top of it and the bottom of it are barely the same conversation. The variable that decides where a given job lands is not the company, the city or the season. It is which part failed.
That is genuinely useful to know before you pick up the phone, because it tells you what to do first: get the fault named. Everything else - comparing quotes, deciding whether to repair or replace, judging whether a price is fair - depends on that one piece of information, and none of it works without it.
A large share of no-cooling calls resolve to a short list of components. Roughly in order of what they cost to put right:
A compressor replacement is not a bigger version of a capacitor replacement. It means opening the sealed refrigerant circuit, recovering the existing charge, brazing, pulling a deep vacuum to remove moisture and non-condensables, and weighing in a new charge. That is a long job done by someone competent, and the labour is most of the invoice.
Three things then decide whether it is money well spent. The first is warranty: manufacturers commonly cover the compressor as a part for a long term while the labour term is far shorter, so a compressor that is technically "under warranty" can still be an expensive day. Ask for the equipment's model and serial number to be checked against the manufacturer's registration - that lookup is free and it changes the arithmetic.
The second is what the system is charged with. If the outdoor unit predates the phase-out of older refrigerants, you are investing in equipment whose future servicing is already constrained, and the honest version of the conversation is about replacement timing rather than about this one part. Refrigerant also has to be recovered rather than released - EPA's Section 608 rules govern that, and a technician who talks about venting it is telling you something about how they work.
The third is whether the system is still a matched pair. Outdoor units and indoor coils are certified as combinations, not individually, and you can look up whether a given pairing is a rated match in the AHRI certification directory. This matters most when a compressor failure turns into a partial replacement: a new outdoor unit on an old indoor coil can be an unrated combination that never delivers the performance on the label.
There are widely circulated formulas for this - multiply the age of the unit by the repair quote, compare against some threshold. They are rules of thumb that got repeated until they sounded like engineering. They are not wrong so much as they are precise about something that is not.
The useful version has three inputs. How old is the equipment relative to a normal service life for your climate and how hard it has been run. How much of the system is being renewed by this repair - a capacitor renews nothing, a compressor renews the expensive half. And what a replacement would actually be, which is no longer a like-for-like swap: minimum efficiency levels for new residential equipment are set federally under the Department of Energy's appliance and equipment standards program, so a new system is a different specification from the one you are replacing, sometimes with knock-on work.
The one heuristic worth keeping is simpler than the formulas: if you have paid for two significant repairs on the same system in two consecutive seasons, the third quote is a replacement conversation whether or not anyone has framed it that way.
Ask every bidder for the same four things in writing, and the noise mostly disappears. The specific component being replaced, by name. What was measured to condemn it. Whether the quoted figure includes the diagnostic fee, the part, the labour and any refrigerant. And whether the part carries a warranty and for how long the labour on it is covered.
It is also fair to ask who is doing the work. NATE runs the main independent certification for HVAC technicians in North America, and a company that puts certified technicians on residential calls will normally say so without being asked. On the installation side, the technical manuals published by ACCA are the industry's sizing and quality standards - the ones that decide whether a replacement is correctly specified rather than simply the same tonnage as the box that came out.
We deliberately do not publish an average price here. A number averaged across the country is wrong in every individual market, and on this repair the local labour rate is most of the spread. What is portable is the structure: the same components fail, the same questions separate a diagnosis from a guess, and the same warranty check is free everywhere.
For the local half, use a company that will name the failed part before quoting the repair rather than pricing a symptom. That is the behaviour that makes a quote checkable, and it is the one thing worth screening for before you let anyone open the unit.
Because the price is set by which component failed, and that cannot be known until somebody measures. A failed capacitor and a failed compressor produce the same complaint - the air conditioner runs and the house does not get cold - and they sit at opposite ends of the price range. Any number offered before a diagnosis is either a guess or a hook to get the truck to your driveway. What you can reasonably settle on the phone is what the visit itself costs, whether going ahead with the work absorbs that charge, and what an out-of-hours call is priced at.
A named fault. That is the whole product. A diagnosis that ends at 'it needs refrigerant' or 'it's the compressor' with no supporting measurement is an opinion, and you cannot shop an opinion against a second quote. A real one comes with numbers behind it - the electrical reading that condemned the part, or the pressures and the superheat or subcooling figures on a refrigerant call. Asking what was measured is not an insult; it is the same question the second opinion will start with.
Sometimes, and the deciding factors are unglamorous ones. Many compressors carry a long manufacturer parts warranty while the labour term is much shorter and has usually expired - so 'the part is covered' and 'the job is cheap' are different statements. Then it depends on which refrigerant the system uses and whether the indoor coil is still a rated match for anything you would put outside today. A compressor on a young, matched, in-warranty system is a defensible repair. The same job on an old system running a phased-out refrigerant usually is not.
Yes, but they only compare if all three are quoting the same fault. Three companies diagnosing independently will sometimes name three different parts, and then you are not comparing prices at all. The sequence that works is to pay one competent technician for a diagnosis, get the failed component named in writing, and then price that specific repair around. If a second opinion disagrees with the first, that disagreement is worth far more than a lower number.
No, and it is worth being clear-eyed about this before spending money. Replacing one component returns the system to whatever condition the rest of it is in. On equipment that is a few years old that is a fine trade. On equipment near the end of its service life, a large repair buys time rather than a working system, which can still be the right purchase - as long as that is what you know you are buying.
