The phrase "your system just needs a Freon recharge" is one of the most common things a homeowner hears on a hot-weather service call, and it quietly contains a wrong idea. Refrigerant is not a consumable. It does not burn off, evaporate away or wear out. A residential air conditioner is a sealed loop, and the same charge is supposed to go round it for the life of the equipment.
So there is only one reason a system is low: it leaked. Everything else on this page follows from that.
Adding refrigerant to a leaking system makes the house cold again, and it will keep doing that until the charge escapes again.
