A refrigerator is the one appliance in the house that cannot wait a week, which is how a lot of people end up buying a new one on the day the old one stopped. It is worth knowing the shape of this decision before you are standing in front of a warm fridge with a cooler full of food on the floor.
Refrigerator faults divide into two groups, and almost nothing about the cost conversation makes sense until you know which group you are in.
Outside the sealed system. Defrost heaters and thermostats, control boards, evaporator and condenser fan motors, door gaskets and switches, thermistors, water inlet valves, ice maker assemblies. These are ordinary component replacements. They produce alarming symptoms - a freezer that works while the fridge does not, ice sheeting on the back wall, a unit that seems to be running constantly - and they are common, diagnosable and generally worth fixing on almost any unit that is otherwise in good condition.
Inside the sealed system. The compressor, the refrigerant circuit, the coils. These need certified handling and specialist equipment, they are the expensive category, and on an older unit they are usually where the economics turn over.
The reason this matters so much is that the two categories are frequently confused from the symptom alone. "It runs but it is not cold" is the classic - a description that fits both a dead compressor and a thirty-dollar defrost part.
It is not a markup. Work on the refrigerant circuit is federally regulated: technicians who open a sealed system must be certified under EPA Section 608, which governs refrigerant handling and recovery. That certification, the recovery equipment, and the requirement to evacuate and recharge properly are all real costs behind the price difference, and they are also a useful screening question. Asking a company whether the technician who would open a sealed system is 608-certified is an entirely reasonable thing to ask, and a straight answer comes back quickly.

What we would not do is decide before the diagnosis. The single most expensive mistake in this category is replacing a working refrigerator because of a cheap part nobody looked at.
Before any of this, two faults are worth ruling out because they need no tools and account for a real share of "broken" refrigerators: condenser coils choked with dust, which makes a healthy unit run constantly and cool poorly and is fixed with a vacuum, and a failed door seal, which you can test by closing the door on a sheet of paper and seeing whether it pulls out with no resistance. Both are also worth doing routinely on a unit that is fine.
Repair pricing is local, because labour rates and call-out costs are local, so a national average would be misleading in both directions. The rates are Chicago rates, but the line items - diagnostic fee, common non-sealed repairs, sealed-system work - are the same categories you will see on a quote anywhere.
The rule people quote - repair if it costs less than half a new unit - is a rough sanity check rather than an answer, because it ignores which part failed and how old the unit is. A far better question is whether the failure is in the sealed refrigeration system or outside it. Failures outside the sealed system are usually straightforward, well-priced repairs on almost any age of unit. Failures inside it are the expensive ones, and on an older refrigerator they are frequently where repair stops making sense.
The compressor, the condenser and evaporator coils, and the refrigerant circuit that connects them. These are the parts that require refrigerant handling, specialised equipment and a certified technician, which is why they price differently from everything else. Symptoms that point that way include a unit that runs constantly without getting cold, a compressor that is running but not cooling, or frost patterns that suggest a restriction rather than a defrost fault.
Most of the common ones, fortunately. Defrost system faults - heater, thermostat, timer or control board - along with evaporator and condenser fan motors, door gaskets, water inlet valves, thermistors and ice maker assemblies are all outside the sealed system. They cause dramatic-looking symptoms, they are frequently what is actually wrong when someone assumes the compressor has died, and they are ordinary parts-and-labour jobs.
Nearly every company charges a diagnostic or service-call fee, and most credit it against the repair if you proceed. It is not wasted money even if you then decide to replace the unit, because the thing you are buying is the answer to the sealed-system question above - which is precisely the fact that decides whether replacing is sensible or whether you are about to throw out a fridge with a forty-dollar thermistor fault.
Substantially. A panel-ready or built-in refrigerator is fitted to the cabinetry around it, so replacement can mean joinery work as well as an appliance, and the appliance itself is in a different price bracket. That pushes the economic break-even much further toward repair, and it is the one category where repairing a sealed system on an older unit is routinely the right call.
